The male farmer, who had been struggling with the effects of a dry spell that devastated his crops, listens attentively. He had not known what to do to address the problem. \
By the end of the play, the male farmer expresses his appreciation for the knowledge shared. He affirms that he is going to try integrated fish farming himself and is visibly excited about the idea.

Triple Blessing buys fish from local farmers and sells it to local consumers around Luwingu district, including the hospital and the prison communities.. In 2022, Cosmas set up seven demonstration ponds to train smallholder farmers on better management practices so that they could buy feed from him and supply the fish he needed to meet demand. Triple Blessing participated in the first cohort of the AICCRA agribusiness accelerator program.

Beatrice Chileshe Mutambo
Beatrice is a fish farmer in Kapata village, Kasama. Together with her family, Beatrice has learned about integrated aquaculture-agriculture through Kasakalabwe Multipurpose Cooperative. In addition to her three fishponds, Beatrice also has bananas, pigs and chickens.

Green GIraffe
Green Giraffe is an agribusiness operating out of Lusaka, Zambia to produce sustainable and healthy snacks and teas. The company works with approximately 200 smallholder farmers in eastern Zambia to source high-quality, local produce, grown using climate-smart practices. Green Giraffe is one of the winners of AICCRA's Innovation and Internship (i2G) program.
Hopeways Farm Enterprises
Based in Mansa, Luapula Province, Hopeways has evolved from vegetable seedling production and input sales into an integrated fish farming enterprise. Operating on 5 hectares with 11 earthen ponds, Hopeways specializes in producing high-quality fingerlings of Oreochromis redelli (Impende) and O. macrochir (Pale). Hopeways participated in the first cohort of the AICCRA agribusiness accelerator program.

In addition to the fish hatchery and agricultural production, Hopeways has further expanded its enterprise to include a supermarket with a cold room, making it easier to buy and sell fish and produce to and from smallholder farmers. This reduces the community’s reliance on imported goods and boosts local livelihoods and nutrition.

Kasakalabwe Multipurpose Cooperative
Kasakalabwe Multi-Purpose Cooperative is based in Kasama and is a hatchery operator for tilapia and catfish seed and fingerling production. With experience in integrating chicken and fish farming, Kasakalabwe promotes integrated aquaculture agriculture systems through on-farm demos and use of socio-cultural innovations to disseminate climate information. Kasakalabwe participated in the first cohort of the AICCRA agribusiness accelerator program.

Kasama Arts
Kasama Arts Zambia (KAZ) is a gender-inclusive group of 35 young performing artists from Kasama. It uses drama, music, and dance to engage communities on critical developmental and social issues including aquaculture, gender, cultural rights, civic education, and heritage protection.

Musongo Kataso
Alongside its aquaculture activities, Toda Raba also promotes Iintegrated farming, combining. Meet Musongo Kataso, a farmer working with Toda Raba to produce vegetables fish farming with vegetables for more efficient use of land and water resources. The nitrogen-rich affluent from the fishponds isare used to irrigate the vegetables, thereby reducing the need for chemical fertilizers.

Toda Raba Farm
Toda Raba produces and supplies fingerlings, table fish, poultry, horticultural products, and technical support to customers and small holder farmers. Toda Raba is currently participating in the second cohort of the AICCRA agribusiness accelerator program through which, among other goals, the enhanced greenhouse systems will produce 2 million fingerlings to meet local needs.

Triple Blessing Supermarket
Triple Blessings Center, a supermarket and restaurant in Luwingu, Northern Zambia is owned by agripreneur Cosmas Chachi. Triple Blessing buys fish from local farmers and sells it to local consumers around Luwingu district, including the hospital and the prison communities. In 2022, Cosmas set up seven demonstration ponds to train smallholder farmers on better management practices so that they could buy feed from him and supply the fish he needed to meet demand. Triple Blessing participated in the first cohort of the AICCRA agribusiness accelerator program.
Safeguarding policy
Ethical standards in research are crucial for safeguarding privacy and confidentiality.
This Virtual Field Trip (VFT) involves two key components that require careful ethical consideration.
Firstly, as a virtual field trip, it includes captured footage in video, voice and photo formats.
The ethical considerations here involve ensuring that all individuals featured in the footage have given
informed consent and that their identities are protected where necessary. We achieved this by obtaining
explicit consent from participants and using anonymisation techniques where appropriate.
Secondly, the VFT immerses you in sites where research activities, such as key informant interviews, survey questionnaires, and remote sensing using drones for spatial analysis, are conducted. The ethical implications
here include ensuring that the research does not exploit or harm the communities involved and that participants' data is handled with utmost care and respect for their privacy.
Moreover, participants were provided with informed consent forms that contained the contact details of the implementing partners in case they have questions, concerns or complaints about the researchers or the interviews they took part in. This was done to ensure that they have safe spaces to communicate any issues they identified.
In these contexts, upholding the ethical standard of fidelity-being faithful to participants' rights and interests and adhering to the Do No Harm humanitarian principle is critical to ensuring that our work is conflict sensitive and ethically sound.
The impact of innovative partnerships
Integrated aquaculture-agriculture systems (linking two or more farming activities, where one is a fish-farming activity) has huge potential to boost nutrition, diversify income streams and increase climate resilience for smallholder farmers. Integrating aquaculture and agriculture activities can also minimize harmful environmental impacts by improving water management and reducing the need for external feed and fertilizer inputs.
The topography of Luapula and the Northern Provinces of Zambia is suited to integrated fish farming; however few people actively participate. This is largely due to limited knowledge of how to adapt to the changing climate and how to construct and manage fishponds and the inability to produce fingerlings during the winter season (when demand of it is usually strong).
Zambia's government has prioritized aquaculture production for those provinces, investing heavily and rallying the assistance of other partners towards building resilience and productivity of the sub-sector.
In response, the Accelerating Impacts of CGIAR Climate Change for Africa (AICCRA) project is working with partners in Northern Zambia, including farmer’s cooperatives, extension officers, CGIAR centres and agribusinesses to demonstrate climate-smart aquaculture-agriculture practices and to support farmers in the uptake of these innovations.
AICCRA’s approach highlights the importance of private sector partners as a viable scaling pathway – particularly leveraging the potential of agribusiness small and medium-sized enterprises. In aquaculture, it starts with the identification of viable private sector firms willing to invest in smallholders, such as those identified through AICCRA’s science-driven Accelerator Program, and then demands reliable input and output markets in climate-smart aquaculture technologies. Farmers win with the availability of reliable markets for fish and quality fingerlings, and the private sector gains farmers who want to buy inputs from their businesses.
Through the first cohort of the Accelerator program, the SMEs in the aquaculture bundle reached more than 45,000 farmers (36 percent women) with training and support for integrated farming, boosting productivity by up to 70 percent.
Other innovative collaborations with partners such as the Kasama Arts Group and with Green Giraffe agribusiness have further scaled the reach and uptake of climate-smart agriculture knowledge and practices. With Kasama Arts, 40,000 farmers and community members have learned about climate-smart agriculture through community drama, art, TV and radio. Green Giraffe, a winner of our Internship and Innovation Grant (i2G) program, has received technical and business assistance in setting up a sustainable model for working with smallholder farmers, boosting local production demand and incomes.

In Tigray, Ethiopia, where nearly a million people are displaced, the resilience of host communities in the region’s capital, Mekelle, is a compelling narrative. The city now shelters over 224,000 IDPs, with malnutrition affecting 70% of pregnant and lactating women and 60% of households facing hunger. Despite a ceasefire, challenges with land, water, and food persist, straining these communities further.

IWMI’s research, blending remote sensing technology with direct community engagement, uncovers the vulnerabilities of these host communities and identifies opportunities for anticipatory action in fragile, conflict-affected settings. This virtual field trip takes you through the streets of Amora, a kebele (neighbourhood/ward) with an estimated population of 5,000-7,000, offering a first-hand look at the research process, testimonies from community members, insights from NGOs and government officials, and the perspectives of youth leaders and research staff.

Kasama

Kasama is a town in the Northern Province. It is situated on the central-southern African plateau, approximately 856 kilometres (532 mi), by road, north-east of Lusaka. Most people in Kasama are not formally employed, and they run small businesses to earn a living. Kasama features a subtropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons.
Mansa

Mansa is the capital of the Luapula Province, and headquarters of Mansa District. It is situated approximately 472 kilometres (294 miles) from Lusaka. Mansa takes its name from the local Chief Mansa and the small Mansa River which flows west to the Luapula River. A decrease in employment in the mines of the Copperbelt forced a return to areas such as Luapula Province, where a lack of employment opportunities has led to forms of subsistence farming contributing to the degradation of surrounding woodlands. Mansa has a subtropical climate with a wet season from November to March, and a dry season from May to October.
Lusaka

Lusaka is the capital and largest city of Zambia. It is one of the fastest-developing cities in southern Africa with a population of about 2.7 million. Lusaka is the central hub of both commerce and government in Zambia and connects the country's four main highways heading north, south, east, and west. Primarily due to its high altitude, Lusaka features a humid subtropical climate. In contrast to the national economy, which is largely comprised of agriculture and mining, the primary contributors to Lusaka's economy are the service sector, as well as wholesale and retail trade.
