A canal irrigation is an irrigation system wherein an artificial waterway is built to bring water to the fields so that irrigation can be practiced. The water may come either from a reservoir or tank, or directly from the river. The canal (s) can be built with materials such as concrete, stone, brick or can also be dug out of the ground.

Using this irrigation system, farmers can produce higher yields while saving at the same water, fertiliser, energy. Drip irrigation is the one of the most efficient irrigation systems of delivering water and nutrient to crops.
