Ethics



Ethical standards are central to the Al Murunah and Al Murunah+ Projects, particularly in safeguarding privacy, confidentiality, dignity, and the safety of communities involved in project activities.


The footage used in this Virtual Field Trip was captured by the Palestine Hydrology Group (PHG) as part of project implementation activities. As the footage includes video and photographic materials from project sites, all necessary ethical considerations were followed to ensure that individuals featured in the footage provided informed consent and that their identities are protected where required.


The Projects works with communities affected by water scarcity, climate change, and fragile contexts. Accordingly, all project activities, including field visits, interviews, surveys, focus group discussions, and documentation, are conducted with careful attention to participants' rights, well-being, and safety. Personal data is collected, stored, and managed in accordance with data protection and confidentiality requirements.


The project team is committed to the principles of Do No Harm, conflict sensitivity, and safeguarding. Participants are informed of the purpose of data collection, their voluntary participation, and their right to withdraw at any stage. Appropriate measures are in place to prevent harm, protect privacy, and ensure respectful engagement with all community members.


In addition, the projects have received International Water Management Institute's (IWMI's) Institutional Review Board (IRB) clearance and Al Murunah+ was granted a Minimal Risk Exemption under Section 45 CFR 46.104(d) of the U.S. Federal Policy for the Protection of Human Subjects. The exemption covers educational tests, surveys, interviews, observations, and secondary data research, recognizing the project's robust precautionary measures, including informed consent procedures, data protection protocols, and staff training.


This clearance provides independent assurance that project activities involving surveys, interviews, and discussions meet recognized ethical standards for research involving human participants.


Through these measures, the Al Murunah and Al Murunah+ Projects seek to ensure that all engagement with communities is ethical, respectful, transparent, and accountable.

Despite a ceasefire, challenges with land, water, and food persist, straining these communities further.

Project Overview (Part 1)
Al Murunah is a five-year project, supported financially and technically by UK International Development. It is led by the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), in partnership with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The project works across Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, and Palestine to enhance water security and climate resilience through integrated resilient nature-based water solutions (RNBWS) for water and agricultural systems.


The project adopts a systems-based approach, combining technical interventions with community engagement, institutional strengthening, and policy alignment to ensure that solutions are scalable, inclusive, and sustainable in fragile and water-scarce contexts.


Building on this foundation, Al Murunah+ expands the core approach by addressing the social and household-level dimensions of resilience, with a strong focus on gender-transformative change. It aims to strengthen the community's voice, improve household decision-making, and enhance access to economic opportunities alongside RNBWS interventions.


The Palestine pilot
In the State of Palestine, the projects are implemented in partnership with the Palestinian Hydrology Group (PHG). The pilot focuses on the Al-Fari'a watershed in the northern West Bank, where water scarcity, infrastructure degradation, and environmental pressures threaten agricultural livelihoods.
The pilot combines RNBWS, agrobiodiversity, and community-led governance to restore water systems and support climate-resilient livelihoods. Key interventions include:


* Rehabilitation and protection of natural spring systems to improve water quality and reliability
* Revitalization of irrigation infrastructure to enhance water delivery and reduce contamination
* Development of agrobiodiversity and conservation gardens to support climate-resilient agriculture
* Creation of community spaces and women-led market opportunities
* Establishment of a Water User Association (WUA) to promote equitable water governance


The pilot is designed not only to deliver local benefits but also to demonstrate a replicable, community-driven model for water resilience in fragile settings.


Role of Al Murunah+ in Palestine
Al Murunah+ builds on the Palestine pilot by strengthening household resilience and gender inclusion. Through facilitated sessions and targeted economic interventions, it supports:

Project Overview (Part 2)
The Al-Far’a Spring Rehabilitation Pilot Project was implemented under the Muruna
Program with the objective of restoring and protecting Al-Far’a Spring, one of the most important water sources in northern Palestine.


Al-Far’a Spring has historically played a vital role in sustaining the three neighboring
communities of Wadi Al-Far’a, Al-Far’a Camp, and Ras Al-Far’a. The spring has long served as a primary source of irrigation water for local farmers and has been central to the development and livelihoods of these communities.


Prior to the intervention, the spring area was largely neglected and unprotected. The spring's protected zone was exposed to environmental degradation, and the spring water was increasingly threatened by contamination resulting from the mixing of spring water with surface runoff, wadi flows, and wastewater. This pollution negatively affected water quality and caused significant losses for farmers who depended on the spring for irrigating their crops.


The pilot project aimed to rehabilitate and revitalize the spring and its surrounding
environment through a series of integrated interventions. These included separating the spring water from wadi runoff, protecting the spring boundaries, rehabilitating the surrounding stone walls, restoring water conveyance channels, and improving the spring area itself. In addition, selected areas were rehabilitated and prepared for conversion into environmental gardens, creating a safe and attractive public space for the local community.


Beyond environmental restoration, the project sought to generate social and economic benefits. Plans were developed to establish a dedicated area within the spring reserve where women entrepreneurs can market and sell products from their small businesses through community bazaars. As a result, an area that was once polluted and neglected has been transformed into a protected water source, an environmental garden, a recreational space for local residents and children, and a potential source of income for women-led enterprises.


As part of the Muruna Program, a Water Users Association was also established for Al-Far’a Spring. The association is responsible for organizing and regulating water distribution among farmers, monitoring and protecting the spring and its related infrastructure, safeguarding water resources from damage, and supporting sustainable water management. The association also works to identify alternative water sources to strengthen water security for local farmers.


A key objective of the association is to ensure fairness, equity, and the protection of farmers’ water rights while promoting the sustainable use of water resources for future generations.

Al-Fara'a Pilot Palestine



The Al-Fara'a area is one of the most vital hydrological and agricultural basins in the West Bank, with a designated service area of 650 dunams sustained by the Al-Fara'a spring, serving a local population of approximately 16,000 residents.

Topography & Water Resources:
The region forms a vital natural corridor sloping gradually from the eastern highlands of Nablus down to the Jordan River, creating a unique climatic diversity blending mountainous and ghor (valley) characteristics.
The area features rich alluvial soils, making it one of the most fertile agricultural zones in Palestine ("the West Bank's vegetable basket"), primarily producing citrus, stone fruits, and irrigated vegetables.


The "Ayn Al-Fara'a" spring and its natural stream serve as the primary lifeline, supplemented by artesian wells utilized for irrigation, drinking water, and eco-tourism.


Demographics & Settlements:
The project is strategically located between three main communities in the Tubas Governorate: Wadi Al-Fara'a (a vibrant agricultural village connecting the northern West Bank to the Jordan Valley), Ras Al-Fara'a (a small farming community of about 3000 inhabitants), and the Al-Fara'a Refugee Camp (established in 1949 south of Tubas city and named after the adjacent spring).
